She said: “One of the challenges that doctors face and members of staff is that they face the challenge of being abused in surgery and I wonder if he would like to apologize for some of the comments that he has made on social media.”

Streeting, who has campaigned against social media companies that allow content inciting violence tweeted: “There would be nothing natural about Jan Moir’s death if I shoved the bigoted old bag under a train.”

In a leaked Direct Message, Streeting – who is the grandson of a London gangster and armed robber who hung out with the Kray Twins – was also accused of threatening a voter on Election Day.

He later issued an apology through a spokesman.

The spokesman said: “The tweets Wes posted as a student activist have been deleted because, however long ago they were posted, they were in bad taste.”

“This particular tweet was in response to a deeply homophobic column about the death of Stephen Gateley, which Wes still maintains was abhorrent and offensive.
