New Irish Rail staff to address issues such as passengers playing music without headphones

Irish Rail is bringing in new employees who can help deal with anti-social behavior such as people singing loudly on the train.

InterCity customer service officers assisted with security with the aim of establishing “peace and comfort” for passengers.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny said the complaints he received about people not using headphones were still ‘numerous’ each year, but that was what they were starting to see more often.

Speaking on Newstalk On Record, he explained: “I do not think it is a plague …

“It’s the movement and the way people waste radio … we see a lot of people playing clips loudly, or playing children’s movies. This could upset some customers.”

He said the aim would be to ‘put an end to quarreling’ at train fairs, reminding people to stop making loud music that could irritate others.

However, he stressed that the new officers should have a “bigger” role and not just sing loud songs.

Kenny observed: “We need to move the client’s attention from the few minutes of selling a ticket to the conference.

“It is useful for seating crews, helping people with luggage, assisting with mobility and discomfort during ascent and descent.

“If there is a delay, [they’ll make] know that people need to connect [will have] their arrangements were made before the climb. It’s a very big part. “

He added that having more staff in the stadium would serve as a barrier to anti-social behavior, as well as a ‘warning system’ for security or gardaí if any problems occur during the trip.
